Just 3 Weeks Until We Bring Our Baby Home!

We are so EXCITED that it's getting very close to June 18, when Brinley will be 8 weeks old and we can bring her home to Austin to live with us.  She comes from a litter of 6 (3 boys and 3 girls) which is very rare for Yorkies.  Yorkie typically have litters of 1 to 3 puppies.  She is the smallest puppy and the darkest.  She looks to be sporting quite the dark moustache, which I hope will lighten as her adult coat comes in.I think she is the spitting image of her dad "Peajay".  He is adorable and I hope she grows up to look just like him.  She already looks to have the peeping tongue like daddy, which is soooo cute!!!

Delicious Homemade Dog Carrot Cake for Your Yorkie Happy Birthday

In anticipation of bringing home our new baby, I'm thinking of a small doggie party where doggie cupcakes and other special homemade dog treats will be served.

My Boomer loves carrots so I was thrilled when I found this recipe.

Dog Carrot Cake Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Frosting

Ingredients:
Muffins:
  • 2 cups shredded carrots
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/2 cup applesauce, unsweetened
  • 2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 3 cups whole wheat flour

Frosting:
  • 8 oz. low fat cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup applesauce, unsweetened

Instructions:
Muffins:
  1. Preheat oven to 350° F
  2. Lightly spray cups of muffin tin.
  3. In a large bowl stir together the carrots, eggs and applesauce. Set aside.
  4. In another medium bowl whisk together the cinnamon, oats and flour.
  5. Slowly mix in the dry ingredients. Stir until well blended.
  6. Spoon mixture into muffin tin. The dough will be thick, so you may wet your fingers to press the dough into place.
  7. The dog cupcake will not rise very much, so do not worry about over filling the muffin tin.
  8. Bake for 25 minutes.
  9. Cool completely on a wire rack before frosting or serving.

Frosting:
  1. Blend both ingredients with a hand mixer until well blended.
  2. Spoon into a pastry bag for easy decorating.

Storing: These dog cupcakes will keep fresh in your refrigerator for 2 weeks. You can freeze them for up to 2 months. If you are going to freeze them, do not decorate with the frosting until they have thawed.

What to Do When Your Male Dog Won't Stop Marking? Belly Bands to the Rescue!

Almost everyone know that Yorkies are one of the most difficult dogs to house train.  But since the breed has so many amazing qualities such as fierce loyalty, non-shedding and non-chewers just to name a few...we Yorkie lovers take measures remedy the house training issue. I like most tried the crate training and the pee-pad method. My teacup male Yorkie does prefer to go outside and does let me know when he needs to go by going to the door and whining.  However, if I'm not around and he has to go then he's going to go!
Boomer in one of his Belly Bands
The best thing I ever did in this regard was to order some belly bands for him online.  The bands are fabric that simply go around his waist like a belt fastened by velcro.  His male parts are covered preventing him from marking.  I put a feminine maxi pad (ones without wings) inside for extra absorption.  These belly bands have been worth every penny since they've saved me countless dollars in cleaning and replacing carpets, rugs, upholstery and drapes.

Here's the link for where I order belly bands on eBay: BELLY BANDS

Super Fast and Easy Homemade Jerky Treats for Your Yorkie

These delicious dog jerky treats are super fast because they're made in the Microwave!
HOT DOG JERKY TREATS
Ingredients:
1 package hot dogs (you can use low fat, too)
Directions:
Cut the hot dogs into thin strips. Place a few layers of paper towels on a microwave safe plate. Add the strips and microwave on HIGH for 5 min.  Take them out of the microwave and let ‘em stand for 5 min. Put the plate of strips back into the microwave and cook for another 5 min.  Take them out and let them cool.  They are done when they are in a jerky state when cooled.
Store the hot dog “jerky” in the refrigerator.
You can’t get any easier than that!

I Can't Wait to Try - KTW Knotless Hair Wraps

I've come upon a product that I can't wait to try!  It's KTW's Knotless Hair Wraps which is a type of tape that only sticks to itself making it ideal for creating a top knot in long haired dogs to keep their hair out of their face.  My 5 year old yorkie "Boomer" has never worn a top knot because he goes to town pulling it out as soon as I can get it in.  He stops at nothing until he gets the hair band out of his hair!

The Knotless Hair Wrap doesn't pull and hurt like a band does.   So it also doesn't break and damage the hair like many rubber bands and hair bands.  The inventors also claim that it's great for swimmers to use in the water, which makes sense if you've ever tried to pull a hair band out of your wet hair!

I'm crossing my fingers that Boomer won't mind this method. Way to go KTW!!!  http://www.knotlesshairwrap.com/
